Alternative Berlin in Pictures
Everyone knows Berlin’s major historical attractions – The Brandenburg Gate, the Berlin Wall, The Holocaust Memorial, The Reichstag and more. However, Berlin has a lot to offer to the visitor looking for contemporary culture as well. It’s impossible not to notice the street art and graffiti covering the buildings, as well as the few, old, mostly unchanged squats still sitting in the downtown area. It seems that every district in Berlin has something new and different to offer. While other cities also have strong counterculture movements, the alternative seems to be moving into the mainstream in Berlin. More and more, visitors are interested in seeing the culture of the city as well as its history. There is even an organization called Alternative Berlin, which gives free tours of non-mainstream attractions all over the city, providing a nice alternative to the usual, tourist-friendly guided tours. Discovering alternative culture in Berlin will lead you to different worlds; from the sandy beaches of Jamaica to wrecked train stations turned creative havens, a traveler can find a wealth of experiences in alternative Berlin.
