Update: Proceeds good for street musicians

By Angella Nabwowe & Pieter Sabel
Everyone is catered for at the Fest. For those Festival hopefuls who can’t afford to stage a show at the Rhodes University Drama Theatre or the Guy Butler Settlers Monument, the Village Green Fair comes in handy.

Street musicians utilising the Village Green Fair are making a fortune from playing traditional music instruments. CueBlog had a chat with Street Drums and Bass from Soweto, Guitarist Andrew “Hammer” Peters and Violist Richard Faathela from Grahamstown.

Update: CueTV also went to Village Green and made a report of the street artists. You can have a look at it below.

  1. Nice story and great interviews – I think it’s really important to support street musicians. Definitely makes the world a better place. But I’m not sure that R3000 or even R5000 is a fortune, really. These guys probably don’t earn much during the rest of the year and the money they make now probably supports their families. Grahamstown has a 70% rate of unemployment.

  2. @ Anne: I’m sure it isn’t a fortune in terms of enough money for them to don’t have to work the rest of the year anymore. But it is a fortune to make in only 10 days, don’t you think?
