Local: “I see a lot of changes and I don’t like it”

Local - ZimkhithaGrahamstonian Zimkhitha (25) is bummed out about this years’ Fest. “I see a lot of changes and I don’t like it.” She explains that there used to be more previews. “It was for those people who cannot afford to go to a real show.” Zimkhitha also sees less sellers and market stalls in the street then in previous years.

“But the thing that bothers me most is the fact that they moved the entire centre of the Festival to the University. That is far out for people in the location, it can be difficult for some people to get there.”

But Zimkhitha has to finally add that she is excited about Fest at the same time: “I hope I can go to the jazz singer Simphiwe Dana, she sings about current issues in life that I can relate to. I would love to see her perform.”

Students’ opinionLocal - Mary + Ashleigh

Mary and Ashleigh are two Master students at Rhodes University and stuck around after exams to experience this years Arts Festival. “We are quite excited to see some good shows and eat good food. The foodstals must be great.” They add “we haven’t really made any plans yet. There is just one theatre show that we have tickets for, because our friend plays in it. But for the rest we’ll just see what some on our path. That’s the way to do it.”

For these students that is what Fest is about: “it is divers with different people, it is open minded and it gives you a liberating feeling. Just go with the flow”.
